The Royal Arcade is Australia’s longest standing arcade and is also Melbourne’s first arcade! Conveniently located in the city centre, the Royal Arcade is within walking distance of Flinders Street Station. Alternatively, you can take tram lines 19, 57, 59, 86, or 96.

History

Opened in 1870, the Royal Arcade is over 150 years old! The land on which this Victorian-era building stands was first purchased in 1837 for £20 and later acquired in 1855 for £650. Construction of the arcade began in June 1869 and was completed in just under a year, with the arcade opening in May 1870.

Gog and Magog

The famous Gog and Magog, 2 giant statues located inside the Royal Arcade, have been a notable feature since 1892. These statues chime every hour, drawing the attention of travellers and locals alike.
