Outside Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building

Royal Exhibition Building

Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building is one of the oldest in the world, being over 140 years old!

The Royal Exhibition Building is one of Melbourne’s iconic landmarks! The building opened in 1880 for the Melbourne International Exhibition. Located in Carlton Gardens, the heritage-listed building features a combination of Romanesque, Byzantine, Lombardic, and Italian Renaissance architectural styles. Its dome was also inspired by Florence’s famous Brunelleschi’s cathedral dome.

History

Development of the Royal Exhibition Building began in 1879. The Carlton Gardens also had some redeveloped to include fountains, garden beds, and grand avenues.

When Melbourne hosted the Summer Olympics in 1956, basketball, wrestling, and weightlifting events were played in the building.

In 2004, the Royal Exhibition Building became Australia’s first World Heritage-listed building.
