Take a Day Trip from Melbourne

Everyone knows Melbourne is Australia’s cultural capital.

Melbourne City Scene

Our arts scene is vibrant, our nightlife unrivalled and our sporting calendar chock-a-block. But what makes Melbourne even more special is the host of incredible places you can visit within a couple of hours’ drive from the beautiful metropolis.

From spectacular surf to world class wineries, nature walks and gourmet produce, there is something for everyone on the fringes of this most fabulous city.

Let’s take a look at some of the awesome adventures you can undertake right outside of Melbourne.

  • Roll along the Great Ocean Road

Victoria’s Great Ocean Road is a stunning drive along the scenic coastline and lush forests. Whether you’re heading for surf along with one of the road’s famous beaches, veering up into the Otways for a bit of forest trekking or checking out the marvellous natural wonders of the Port Campbell National Park, the Great Ocean Road promises an action-packed adventure worthy of any “world’s best driving route” compilations.

We recommend starting your journey at the Port Campbell National Park, where the famous Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, Grotto and London Bridge all dot the wondrous coastline.

  • See the Penguin Parade at Phillip Island

Things are just as fun on the other side of Port Phillip Bay, where places like Phillip Island play host to amazing natural adventures unlike anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere. Phillip Island is renowned for its Penguin Parade – a spectacle where the island’s little penguin population waddle back ashore after a tiring day’s fishing.

Just around the bend from the Penguin Parade is Seal Rocks, where 25,000 fur seals laze about on a rocky outpost in the ocean. If you’re keen to see some more land-dwelling animals, be sure to head to the Phillip Island Wildlife Park, home to plenty of kangaroos, koalas, wombats and more!

  • Be bougie in the Yarra Valley

The Yarra Valley is one of Australia’s top wine regions, producing world class Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, cabernet sauvignon and more. The Yarra Valley is also incredibly beautiful, and makes for the perfect day trip, where one can marvel at the lush scenery whilst sampling a few of the region’s revered vinos.

But if you really want to check out the Yarra Valley for its immaculate beauty, be sure to climb aboard a hot air balloon ride – it’s a truly surreal experience.
